Wistful Wednesday: 1955 Deer Hunting Continued

Last week I told you all about the deer that hung in the stairway at Far Guys childhood home for many years. It is now upstairs in our home.

I actually found an old photo of the deer hanging high in the stairway. The Deer November 1955

Then I found photos of many members of the family with the deer.  Now this would have been totally normal in the 1950’s and beyond if you were part of a hunting family.   I was always excited when my Dad came home with a deer and we wanted to have our photographs taken with it too!

Jay Eugene and Marvin Nov 1955

Cousin Jay, Far Guy and Far Guys Dad.

Janice November 1955

Far Guys sister..I can just hear Far Guys Mother saying “Janice put your scarf on before going outside with that deer.”

Bonnie and Marvin November 1955

This sure looks like cousin Bonnie to me..high-water pants and all. Look at that.. no snow boots either…no wonder she likes to escape to Florida in the winter.

It was fun for me to find all these old photos in an old hunting and fishing photo album that belonged to Far Guys Dad.  I am in the process of scanning them…just one of my many projects:)

  1. They are great. Deffinatly different in those days you wouldnt see some one celebrating their kill like that now a days. I used to hunt with my dad and we did the same thing being on a farm and in the country there was no one around and this was in the 70s! Great post and photos. Have a good day !

  3. Wow look at the size of that rack. Do they still grow them that big, or are the animals harvested before they get that large? Great old memories.

  4. I don't know what to say, I just dislike killing animals, even if it's for the good of the species. It was a different era then, and I didn't grow up in a hunting family.

  5. Who wouldn't want their picture taken with a dead animal, I know I would......and then I'd want to skin it when picture time was done!

  6. Reminds me of the pictures of me when I was little with the bow-hunted deer my Dad "bagged". I didn't know any different and sat with them for pictures. Now it makes me sad, but I understand people hunting for food, I guess. They were different times.

  7. I find all of these posing with the dead deer photos a bit creepy, but the one I dislike the most was the one two weeks ago.
    Yeah, I know, different times...:)

  8. What a jump back in time and the deer continues to be famous and appreciated.

  9. I think those deer were celebrated not only for the rack, but for their food too. More families had to count on that meat for their families. At least, I know my husband's did. There were 4 little boys to feed.

  11. Old photos are the best. They capture bits and pieces of the past so we can relive them. GREAT story about the deer at the top of the stairs.

  12. I used to have a deer just like that hanging in my house in Sheffield. I took it down just as we were about to sell the house but it revealed a massive crack in the wall underneath, so I re-hung it and included it in with the sale of the house!

  13. I have a picture from the 80's with my small son & husband and a bloody deer hanging off the tail gate of the pickup. I also have friends and family who would burst into tears upon seeing it. I, personally, would rather take pictures of them. Bottom line, we ate that deer and shared it with others.

  15. I love how you live each day to the fullest - - - and enjoy having projects to do. I know some people who get bored with life - - - and it astounds me. There is so much fun stuff to do - - - - but it often seems there isn't enough time to get it all done.

  16. my dads family were all hunters.. not so much on my mom's side. However, I remember a story about them having to hunt when she was young in order to have food. period.
If I had to live off the land I would starve. But then - we are spoiled because someone else does all the butchering and by the time we see it - is is saran wrapped and under lights.
