Calm Waters

IMG_5483

I went kayaking the other night. The water was really warm..like pee..that doesn’t happen very often in Minnesota.  Usually our lakes are cool and refreshing.  I stayed near shore.  I am not an idiot. One of the major rules about kayaking is don’t get too far from shore because you may have to swim back!  I found the kayak to be more tippy than a canoe. The double paddle felt strange so I will probably buy myself a canoe paddle.

I stayed dry..it was peaceful and calm out on the lake..quiet too.. only the squawking of a Great Blue Heron and the sound of Chance splashing in the water interrupted the silence:)

  2. It sounds wonderful to me. Except for that warm warm water. The silence and peacefulness would be a great experience.

  3. Beautiful photos, Connie. Looks like a great way to unwind at the end of the day. I can just imagine hearing the splashing water from Chance having a good time!

  4. I have a canoe paddle i will give you. Come and get it. I prefer the double as it is quicker acting, when you need it. And I can swim like a fish, so never worry about how far from shore I get. Of course when I go kayaking ion the spring when the runoff runs off, I am in small waterways that only run water in the spring and usually is not over 1 or 2 feet deep! ;-)

  7. The pictures looks so peaceful!
We used to live near a tidal river. There were evenings when I'd come home, dump the kayak in the water and go out for a paddle. It was so refreshing. All the hassles of the day would be drained out as I paddled along.

It took me a while to get used to the double-ended paddle, as I was used to a canoe, but one I got used to it, I enjoyed it.

  8. I loved my kayak when I lived on the lake. I would go out early in the morning and watch the otter play. You will get used to the kayak if you open your legs like a triangle with your knees against the sides of the kayak it wont be a bit tippy. Enjoy.

  9. Sounds wonderful, I'm envious!
I've paddled in a canoe and a kayak, and I would find the canoe paddle very awkward in a kayak. Keep practicing, I think you'll come to like it:)

  12. That seems like great fun. I plan to try it next year at Star Lake, but I'll be wearing a life vest because the lake is deep even a few feet from shore.

  14. "Warm like pee" sounds SO (not) inviting. I think a double paddle would be better......you just need to practice.

  16. Good for you. You may have to buy another one and a third for Chance. I always liked seeing the lake calm once in a while and the sounds travel so well with calm water.

  17. I never learned how to swim and am a little afraid of water if I can't touch bottom. I'm certain I would be terrified of a kayak, but wish I could enjoy. I know so many people who do...
