On Sunday afternoons I usually get to pick someplace that I would like to go for an adventure. Last Sunday I asked to go to the rookery. We have not been there since 2009.
We stopped by a local auction sale, didn’t buy a thing but got to visit with friends…then were were off to the rookery. Jo drew us a map so we wouldn’t wander around Hubbard County half the day.
The first thing I noticed was the smell of very odiferous dead fish and there were just a few fish skeletons on the road with bit of decaying meat still attached to their bones. Uffda..then the croaking sound of young herons wanting to be fed. It was a symphony of many little voices which must drive the parents up the wall or at least far out into the lake to fish where it is quieter.
I had a better camera this time around. I wrote about the Great Blue Herons before, you can find that blog post here..it is not for the faint of heart..they do not feed all the chicks that hatch..it is the survival of the fittest:(
I bet Chance really had his "smeller" going full blast!!
ReplyDeleteThose nest look waaaaaay up there - your shot of one of the Herons in the tree is excellent!
That was a great picture, Connie! Sounds like a great day for an adventure!
ReplyDeleteI have a tough time with that part of Nature, so I'll skip going back to the link. Great shot of the heron, though.
ReplyDeleteSuch a good picture, we love those kind, have a very blessed day.
ReplyDeleteLove the picture. I didn't know any of that about Herons. Interesting. Mother Nature has her own set of rules.
ReplyDeleteWow - wonderful pic of the blue heron! Sounds like a great day out.
ReplyDeleteWe have one of these south of us on ou highway along the Beaver Creek. One can only see the nests at a distance but we see the birds eating in the bayou. The county bought the land around it to protect it from development and one can walk back in to see if if the gate isn't locked. I will have to see what we have someday. You got a great shot and I didn't realize that they were called a rookery. Makes a lot of sense.
ReplyDeleteGreat picture of the bird. We had them nest in a spruce tree here one year......I always thought they'd nest on the ground....who knew;)
ReplyDeleteLovely picture :-)
ReplyDeleteDont you think herons look creepy as they stand so still...
They are beautiful birds. So sad though about the survival of the fittest. You love learning about so many things and we appreciate you sharing them with us.
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures. Glad you didn't get lost! I didn't know that not all of the young weren't fed. Very interesting.
