Minnesota Wildlife

A few days ago Josh and Hunter saw a wolf, very near our houses. It was in Hunter and Kate's yard next door. They got a photo of it..it looks ragged and possibly sick..they said it was not acting right.  They have also seen two bear in the area.

The bear that raided our bird feeders has not been back.  Some of our birds have left, the goldfinches are not here in the numbers that they were.  A few redpolls are back for some reason..who knows what strange sense drives them to move from one place to the next.  Perhaps the bugs are better down by the lake.  The bluebirds are raising some young.  The baby robins fledged from the nest on Far Guys ladder.  Our usual nuthatches and chickadees remain. I miss the orioles and the indigo buntings they must have gone north too.

We saw a straggly looking deer one day. We were both concerned how bad it looked.

IMG_3205 I took this photo through the windshield.

IMG_3207 Far Guy rolled down his window and I got one photo before she ran off.

Usually deer you see in Minnesota are beautiful creatures, well as beautiful as tick hauling garden eating deer can be. I am not sure what was wrong with this one, perhaps it was just a bad hair day:)

  1. Connie, I don't feel so bad after reading your blog about the wildlife. I thought I was doing something wrong because I too have less birds than I did a week and a half ago. I haven't changed anything but they just don't seem to be around as much any more. Did have a female deer in the yard the other day - she didn't look as ragged as yours though.

  2. We have a lot of birds that come then move on up north in the spring. Thank goodness no bears or wolfs. The deer moved on when they started to build here. It may be about time for us to move on, now there are to many houses and people.

  3. How lucky you are to have so much wildlife close by.

  4. You have had a bunch of critters lately. That deer looks pretty mangy. It was a rough winter. Maybe it's just feeling that. Hopefully the new green buds and grass will have it filled out soon.

  5. The deer looked sad, too. I guess all the strange weather could have the birds mixed up.

  6. That dear did look pretty mangy, Connie. I have heard of foxes getting scabies and wondered if it also affects other species. Far Guy certainly was interested in that chipmonk.

  8. Thanks for the wildflower photos and about thier habitat. I wonder if that poor deer has some sort of tick fever. She really did look bad.

    Great Post, once again, Connie.

  9. My wildlife consists of snakes and a raccoon that likes to crawl up my trellis and walk around on the roof of the house to get to the trees. I didn't think deer shed but this one looks like it is doing so. Deer are again so plentiful here that they are being hit by cars continually.
