The Blue-eyed Grass is blooming. It is a very small in stature Iris and not a grass..the person who named it must have been having a bad day.
She is truly one of the early wonders of summer. She is a Native plant, and is not fussy about water or where she lives.
We had summer for three days..it was well above 90 degrees then someone decided it was too much of a good thing and we dipped into the 40’s last night. It was so sunny one day, that I in my no make up mode and with no hat got sunburned. The only time it hurts is when I brush my hair..uffda..
The Lupines have begun to bloom.
I like Lupines. They reseed themselves and bloom all over the wildflower/weedy area. They are not fussy either..if it rains they get watered, if a deer walks by they get fertilized.
One of the Board Members asked me what kind of flowers I preferred to take care of in pots outside the museum doors, petunias or geraniums. I replied “It doesn’t matter..I am excellent at killing both of them.” I hate plants I have to fuss with and ones that I have to water. I suggested plastic flowers..I usually have good luck with them.
Too many years in the greenhouse has burned me out, I have no desire to dig in the dirt, or even visit a greenhouse to purchase something that I will have to water or fertilize half the summer:)

ReplyDeleteI am the same way with plants. Give me rocks to work with, I can't kill them.
I love geraniums and had the same problem making them thrive in a southern window in my Colorado home. I saw a similar flower to that blue eyed grass one, I wonder if they are the same or related.

ReplyDeleteMuch like you, I no longer want a yard full of flowers to care for. The few foundation plants we purchased pretty much take care of themselves! With our extreme heat this summer, I sure am happy with our choices.

I'm the same way, Far Side. Much better at what I don't have to worry about. If it can grow on it's own, it's my kind of plant. :)

ReplyDeleteI love lupines but can't get them to live. We have a plant with a white flower that looks similar to your blue eyed grass.....I'm trying to find out what it is.

ReplyDeleteYour Lupines were so pretty last year we just had to have some. So we planted some seeds and now they are blooming! They are so pretty, we all love them.

I like lupins too, (apparently lupin can be spelled with or without the 'e'), but the seeds, pods and young leaves are poisonous. Not that that puts me off growing them:) http://museum.gov.ns.ca/poison/?section=species&id=99
See I knew that wasn't the best job for gardeners. I feel the same way sometimes, not the hate part, just the burnt out part.

I feel the same way about potted plants. And my thought for the yard is if the flowers can grow and live on their own, then I will enjoy them. If not, I will go and see those of somebody else. It's too hot to play outside and I'm not energetic enough anymore either.

ReplyDeleteBlue-eyed grass - I have that in my untended edges of my Market Garden and in my ungrazed Hedgerow meadow, naturally occuring, even though USDA plant profiles says I don't. I like little surprises like that.
