First day of February

Good bye January..see ya..in eleven months.  So long to your bitter cold and gloomy days and long nights.

Welcome February..the short month..here is what the calendar looks like..someone has a birthday this month. IMG_1184

Yessiree I have all my shopping done for the birthday boy ..I told him to pick out some model train stuff on the Internet and I have been intercepting the shipments.  That is truly my kind of shopping.

We got just a skiff of snow since yesterday..the sun is out this morning..it was a little chilly this morning –8 F  or –22C. It may have been colder..I did not get up at the crack of dawn.

The bunny rabbit was here, scrounging around the bird feeders.  I feel sorry for her/him..but if I set up a feeding station with alfalfa  and cracked corn it will make them easy prey for Fox, Owls and Eagles..so I find it more humane to let them fend for themselves.  Something was hunting in our area yesterday, Chance sniffed the air..grabbed the ball and went to the door.

I have been taking a Vitamin D tablet everyday for a month,  the consensus is that it is not making me less cranky. The pill that is supposed to make me more sun shiny is not working. If anything my crankiness has been accelerated.  Have you noticed that when people say “Hi, How are you?”  It is really just a polite thing..they don’t really care..so if you answer “Well, I am really cranky, thanks for asking.”  They look at you like you have three heads…although some of them laugh out loud…I think those are the really cranky people..I just have the nerve to say what they are thinking.

What do you think?  Is it better to sugar coat what you think..If someone asks you something should you lie..or tell the truth?

How are you this fine day?  “Cranky, really cranky..”

Hi..I haven’t seen you in a long time, what have you been up too?  “Well apart from trying to stay warm..I have been busy putting the finishing touches on my crankiness.”

Or with a phone solicitor. How are you Madam?  “Cranky”..sorry to hear that.. how is the weather up there in Minnesota? “Freaking cold and gloomy.”  Sorry to hear that too..what do you enjoy about Minnesota?   “The one month of summer that we get spread out over three months.”  :)

  1. You are my favorite cranky lady. Even if you are cranky, you make me smile. This one made me laugh out loud. I don't need vitamin D to help my mood, I have my own Far Side therapist. Thank you Dr. Far Side!!
I agree with you. Good bye and so long January - the most miserable month on the calendar.

Hope the birthday boy gets lots of nice surprises. Happy Birthday Far Guy. I have a birthday boy too - a grandboy. He will turn 11 or 2.2 years old -depending on how you count- he's a leap baby.

  6. Ohh, I thought we had a lot of snow! (Not to mention those subzero temperatures.) No wonder you're cranky! On the few occasions when I tried to be truthful about how I was feeling, when I started to tell them, it was obvious that they really didn't care. Then, I make the quick switch, smile, and say, "Fine."

  7. Happy Winter! So that is what those cranky callers need - VITAMIN D! Send that bunny over to visit our outside bunnnies and to share some vittles!

  8. You're right, people who say "How are you?" really just mean "Hello." I had to learn to just say "Fine," and try to mean it. When I want to vent, or share my troubles, I either turn to a close friend or post to my blog. :-)

  12. Been lurking for a while here. Love your blog! Same kind of weather here. Just too dang cold and dark for too dang long.

You know you have a true friend when they ask how you are and then ask how you really are and then stay around to listen.

  15. I do the Shakespearian thing and to mine own self be true. Someone asks me how Im doing by gawd I tellem. Of course I dont have any friends anymore.....

  16. Don't sugar coat anything response is my thinking. Why open your mouth to speak untruth? Just be yourself and answer honestly. I never did understand that junk about "how are you" and "fine". Why ask if you don't want to hear an honest answer.

  17. So perfect! There's something so perfect about the word "cranky," it says it all for me. Better than "grumpy" or "pissed off," by far! It's been pretty fine here, though. I'm fine, just fine -- how many times have I said that and thought something entirely different in my head? They don't really want to hear me tell them how I am! But now, I'll use the cranky word! It's perfect!

  18. I LOVE reading your blog. All this (blogging) is pretty new to me, and I have spent a very good amount of time going back through your older posts. I especially enjoyed reading about the ice, and the collection of it. Thanks for sharing your memories with me.

On the subject of being cranky, I think most people have enough "crank" in their own lives, and just don't take the time to really find out how other people are doing. I, like so many others, did not know about the Vitamin D...may have to add that to my list of things to try out. I know my family and friends would appreciate it. lol

  19. When people ask, tell them. I usually tell them I am old an fat or fat and jolly, depending on my mood.
