Hydrangeas and me

I love the long days of summer, the evening light is perfect for some great photography.

IMG_6242 The perfect Pee Gee Hydrangea blooms that I have waited all summer for are at their best in August. I can stay out till at least 9PM and still have good light for photographs.

Fall enters and the cooler temperatures change everything.

My Hydrangea is still beautiful, I  appreciate the different hue it takes on in its Fall dress.  I can still take photos in the evening..but I am back home by 8PM.

Then it gets colder and darker.

We get some frost..I can still see some beauty in the Hydrangea blooms..a frosty beauty.  Staying out till 7PM is still possible if the sun is shining.

Then it happens Daylight Saving Time drops us into the dark depths of winter..now I must go out in the afternoon to photograph anything..and if it is cloudy by 4PM I am done.

IMG_9393It snows and covers up my blooms. Soon the snow will accumulate and cover the entire plant..it will be just a few twigs sticking in the air.  It will be entrapped  in the deep freeze for months.

As the Hydrangea progresses so does my overall mood.  I get a tad crankier. My good moods are few and far between. I think they are stuck in the snow bank just like the Hydrangea.

Forget winter.. how many days till spring? :)

  2. You are still funny - - - even if you think you are cranky. However, I can tell you love the outdoors so it is understandable when you are missing the milder days. Thanks for showing us the progression of this beautiful flower. That's a good idea for the rest of us to think about doing this year - - - a progression of something -whether a project or some plants.
We have very cool temps today - - higher forties. Plus it was raining this morning. That affects a lot of moods in this house beginning with the cats!

  4. I love Hydrangeas and your pictures are beautiful.

I dread the time change in the spring and in the fall. Going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark is awful.

I thought you got blue skies in winter, even though it's frozen. Guess we're not moving out your way! I'm still dreaming about moving to snowy Idaho though. At least that would get me out of the endless rain and gray sky! It's OK to be grumpy in winter Far Side, I think we all are - at least a little.

  6. Hubby and I both are on the far side of 50, lol. I can well relate. Hubby has RA and I live with colitis. We also live where it is cold and snowy and I pine for spring when I can get into my garden. I hope we have as good an attitude as you, we sure do try. Enjoyed your pics and reading your blog. Blessings. Lady Jane

  12. These are my favorites...just love them. I say we just skip winter and head straight away into spring, it would make me very happy. I don't mind snow or cold...what I don't like is dreary, misty, and cloudy.

    Beautiful pictures of your Hydrangea!

  13. Oh, the photos are so beautiful! I know what you are saying about crankier moods with less light. Twilight is 3:30 here now and it's pitch dark at 4:00 but for some reason this year it isn't bothering me. Maybe because I'm getting older and feel the passing of the seasons. Anyway, I understand what you mean.

  15. I saw a lot of Minnesota snow on the interstate yesterday as it fell from trucks and cars along the road. I really like your progression but I kept feeling colder as I kept strolling.
