Hard Water

Imagine Chances reaction to the ice that covered the local “Mill Pond” yesterday.

IMG_9332

This is Straight Lake at the Mill Pond..I am not sure if the big lake is frozen yet..probably not.

IMG_9337 I had thrown that stick out on the ice for Chance…he is no dummy and would not go after the stick.

IMG_9341 Far Guy had to try out the ice..I was certain he was going to get wet feet..but he only succeeded in making a big crack in the ice.

Winter has arrived, there has been just a little snow overnight..the ground is not quite white. It looks like our “third snow” is the one that will stay till May. Oh well that is only six months away.  Six months of cold, six months of snow, six months of dreary days that is how we “do” winter here in Minnesota.  I have to remind myself it is a privilege that not everyone has, I am lucky, very very lucky.

It has been so dreary that we finally moved our woodcarving into the house..it makes a bit of a mess..but it will keep Far Guy sane. I have half a million projects to do and could keep busy for years, but I will carve too, at least until the Christmas tree takes up the carving spot.

Yesterday we went to a local craft show, I bought a hand embroidered dish towel from Vi a neighbor..she threw in a jar of Wild Plum Jelly!  Then we went to the Fish Decoy Carvers Show..let me tell you ..life is really exciting up here in the wintertime:)

  1. Yes, it seems like projects are always a plenty that is for sure! 6 months of winter is usually a given here also! Snow, cold, freeze, etc. Plum jelly sure sounds good!

  2. No frozen lakes here yet.. Oops forgot we have no lakes in this county. Speaking of... I fished Fish Hook several times the summer my son "counseled" at the Boy Scout camp on Bad Axe. I do think that the year round eagles we now have here survive on road & hunting kill. Basically there are the winter replacement species for the south heading vultures.

  3. Six months of winter, no thanks! We are getting our taste of it right now, but it should disappear soon and we'll be back to our mild wet weather. Here's hoping anyway:)

  4. Ahh--winter is the time for art and crafts and reading and baking and snuggling up under a blanket to watch TV. It came early this year, but I would truly miss it if it didn't arrive at all. I can't imagine a Christmas without snow. ;)

  5. Craft shows are FUN! Was Far Guy not scared about the ice dumping him in the water? I would have been. Is it thick enough already to support people? Obviously - - - but it did crack. It sounds like you have "cozy" going inside your home with your projects! You are a creative, busy person.

  6. Thrilled to have stumbled onto your blog. We spent several happy vacations at Breezy Point on Straight Lake and have many good memories. Have not been back in several years although we have been to Hackensack. Keep on posting. A reader from Eastern Iowa.

  7. Love your photos Connie. I saw EBet (Lanny's daughter) pictured snow on her blog also this weekend. We are in the 70's today in GA. The woodworking sounds very rewarding and I bet the jelly from Vi is delicious. Sending big hugs to everyone.

  11. Hey, I read this in the morning and I guess I didn't comment. I am low grade crazy right now and can't be trusted. I will be better. I love the curiosity of both man and beast about the frozen water.

  12. Hard water, indeed! I am glad I live further south. It will be cold and it will snow but hopefully our winter will be shorter.

  13. We have learned to plan projects for winter and this is going to be our third winter in snow. Doesn't take long to know days can be long when it is icy and snowy and so cold out and not comfortable to be out there long. Far Guy must have known that the place he ventured out to on the ice was not very deep even if he did crash and fall. Chance is so smart.

  14. Oh my goodness glory girl, I thought ya were talkin' about hard water. The kind that clinks as it runs from the faucet leavin' all those lovely spots on glasses and shower doors.

Baby, ya truly had the hard stuff goin' on!!! It will probably reach 70's today before the temps start droppin' this afternoon. We do have some light snow predicted Wed. and the hight Thursday in the 30's. That's Missouri for ya.

There's an old sayin' 'round these parts..."If ya don't like the weather just hang around awhile...it'll change!!! Never fails...it does!

God bless you and enjoy this week sweetie!!!

  15. Goodness - that much ice already! It's freezing here but too much wind for any ice to form...

    Love your shots!
