Chance: Sivertson Lake

Far Side wanted to show you a photo of some idiots.

They are North Dakota idiots ( their vehicle had North Dakota License Plates), I ran down the hill and barked at them.  I ran out on the lake just a little..when Far Side shrieked for me to come back..I did.

Far Side wondered if they had spikes in their shirt pockets, just in case they fell through the ice.  Her Uncle Andrew always carried them in his shirt pocket all winter..especially to the fish house.  She would tell him to be careful on the ice..he would pat his pocket and say “I’ve got my spikes.”  If you fall through the ice into the water, you can use the spikes to claw at the surface of the ice until you get a good enough grip on the ice to pull yourself out.

IMG_9490  I sat and watched the fisherman while Far Side took this photo just before sunset.  Nothing exciting happened..they didn’t fall in the lake..but I wasn’t allowed out on the ice to see how thick it was either.

It was 45 degrees F yesterday, and mostly sunny.  More of the snow shrunk. Far Side said “I could take this kind of weather for the entire winter!  If it stays nice for a few more days all the snow will be gone!” :) IMG_9513

  1. Since you said you haven't had enough real cold to make the lake ice over thick enough to walk on. What are these people doing on the Lake? Are they stupid? Well you did say that didn't you. I didn't know about the spikes. I would panic so spikes wouldn't help me. The snow looks so pretty.

  2. We always get our share of blockheads who fall through the ice here, too. Usually it's in January though, not the beginning of the season. Maybe yours had a yen for fresh fish that common sense couldn't stop. More likely they have no common sense at all.

  3. Ahhh excitement for the season over takes some brains. Like mountain climbers during avalance season. Sometimes I wonder if rescue workers ever feel like not taking care of someone who had ample warning and didn't heed it.

  4. I sure am glad Chance you did not go out on the ice it just couldn't be very safe yet. I bet Far Side can shriek good and loud when she thinks you may get hurt better to listen for those shrieks.

  5. Chance, I am glad you listen to Far Side. Those folks are dumb to be out on that and it's thoughtless of the rescuers too who might have to risk their lives to save them. Beautiful photo of the sun and snow with you Chance.

  7. I can just see Mother Nature laughin' at ya sayin' "honey, I srunk the snow!" :o)

It amazes me how some people survive at all! The fishermen were fortunate they didn't fall through.

    God bless ya

  8. Oh my! I was always afraid to go out on the ice, even when my ex said it was totally safe....but I went, until one nice day we almost couldn't get back because the edges were all melting!! Those spikes sound like a really good idea...along with a safety rope around your waist, I'd say!

I don't even go out on the ice in the middle of winter.

  10. We have the ice fishermen here that have to be rescued. I say leave them there! That sounds harsh but year after year .....come on now. Get a brain!! Sorry. Just not in the mood for people like that. And our are from Michigan.

  11. There's always a big controversy here every year, with people that cross the 'out of bounds' barriers in the ski areas, and then end up having to be rescued because they ended up down a ravine and couldn't get out. There is talk of making them pay something towards their rescue, even though the rescuers are all volunteers.
Unfortunately it seems that you can't fix stupid!

  12. Ice is scary and stupidity and ice doesn't mix. I am glad you obey well, Chance.

  13. Yes - they are always out early and all season long on that little lake.... Smart - probably not!

  14. I haven't lived in upstate NY in almost 40 years but even I know it's too early in the season to trust ice over a body of water. I am so glad you did not have to witness a drowning today.

  17. Yikes! Chance, you have wisdom beyond your years. Maybe they could borrow some from you.

  18. OMG, they WERE idiots...there is NO way that ice should have held them..they must have had angels with them. You should have made up cards to put on their windshield saying:
"this is God. What were you thinking of going out on that thin ice? I gave you better brains than that. Are you suicidal?"
