Wistful Wednesday : Prom 1968
The theme for prom that year was "Love is Blue" there was a real band called "The Kingsman." I doubt that they managed that terribly instrumental, sixty piece orchestra version of "Love is Blue." It must have sounded like a good theme for prom, to some adult on the prom committee. I would have suggested, Those were the days my friend, or Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, or Hello. I love you. or Sittin on the dock of the bay..but I was not on the prom committee..ever.
I know we went out to dinner, and we both think we went out with several other couples, but can't remember who.. we think that was the year that we went to Detroit Lakes to the old Erie Junior Club..a pretty fancy place with real tablecloths and linen napkins. We had quite a detailed discussion at Perkins in Detroit Lakes recently on a Saturday evening, when a couple going to prom were being seated. Far Guy said "What kind of dork takes his girl out for dinner at Perkin's for prom?" I replied, "Maybe it is her favorite place to dine, or maybe it's the economy."
Let me tell you, there was no way, I had the same dress as some other girl. I picked out the pattern and my Mother sewed my dress, why in the world I chose this particular shade of Lilac is still a mystery. The back of the dress was stunning, it had about 50 tiny little covered buttons with those tiny little fabric loops, and that train..it was to die for. The shoes are all matchy, matchy. I still have that corsage, it was pressed in a book and saved in a greeting card box, it is upstairs someplace.
Far Guy got a new suit for graduation and he wore it to prom, I guess his Mother must have picked out that fashion forward tie, and no doubt his dad tied the tie for him.
Oh... to be that young again, or that skinny, and to see all Far Guys hair! :)
That is so awesome! You two look amazing!
ReplyDeletePerkins huh? Ask Far Guy if he knows what it cost to go to prom these days? My guess is after they bought or rented their tux and gown, then shoes, hosiery, flowers, hair and nails there was nothing left! Mom's don't make dresses anymore and a suit at the prom is unheard of. It's all gotten out of hand in my opinion, especially in this economy.
It is expensive now, but what isn't. A quick stop at the grocery store is also a quick way to drop at least $50 even if it's just bread, milk and meat! Oh well, the good old days had kinks too.
ReplyDeleteYou both look great! That is a lovely dress. I cannot imagine all those covered buttons. Amazing that you have the corsage still. What precious memories Connie.
ReplyDeleteI do realize Proms are expensive now, they were expensive back then. The one thing I realize now is there are no Supper Clubs anymore, at least not in this area. I have always thought a good meal with good atmosphere was important on a date. Matter of fact, I once drove 200 miles out of my way in order to take Connie to a special place. Lets see a blog about that. I would like to see her put that experience into words.
ReplyDeleteFar Guy,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you were quite the date! I can see why Connie married you.;D
What a nice photograph and I love your dress too. The two of you make a nice looking couple. Becca
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that you guys are high school sweethearts and went to Prom! What a great photo...what wonderful memories! :)
ReplyDeleteOh - how sweet. It's neat that you married your prom date. Did you know he was "the one" even then?
ReplyDeleteWhen my son went to prom a couple years ago, one of the girls parents made a meal for all of them and their little sisters served it to them. Apparently quite a few of the kids around here do this. Thought that was unusual but a good idea.
Such a cute post!
ReplyDeleteIt is so bizarre how time flies so fast...yet we still feel young inside, isn't it?
That is so awesome! You two look amazing!
ReplyDeleteYou look so pretty and Far Guy so handsome..
Julia ♥
You two look wonderful, but somehow you look older than high school students. Must be the suit and tie.
ReplyDeleteAwwwwwww, you guys are soooo cute!

I found your blog today and think it is great. I love your dog, Chance - such a handsome guy. Raised with a Border Collie, I have an extra special fondness for them. Now I blog a lot about my yellow lab. I am anxious to read your past posts. Come by my blog sometime. myweathervane.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteYou guys are the sweetest! Love it!
ReplyDeleteAnd so young and skinny and hairy in this picture. That dress is fabulous and I think lilac is lovely.
I am 4 yrs. older, graduated in 1964. Your prom reminded me of mine. I, too, married my high school sweetheart and 43 years later...we still are a twosome. Thank you for the memory. I love your blog, the photographs, Chance, the old photographs....my sister sent me your blog and I am grateful for it. Harriet
ReplyDeleteThis does indeed bring back memories for me, too. I was a Job's Daughter and went to a lot of formal dances, but had only one dress for all of them--and it had a train just like that. It's still in the closet at my dad's and I open the door just to feel that yellow satin again whenever I'm up there. I had forgotten about getting the dyed to match shoes (Thom McAn's was the store that did them here). My daughter and her boyfriend were going to the prom with one other couple and turned out the girl's dress was identical to hers. My daughter's date could NOT understand what all the hullabaloo was about until he told his sister and mom.... My daughter's dress had already been altered (by a seamstress, not me!) so fortunately the other girl found a dress she liked even better & could exchange. Whether it's 1968 or 2001, sweet or full of angst, prom memories are so vivid. The fact that you are still with your date 41 years later--that's special, indeed. Those smiles shine down through the years. Thanks! *debbi* P.S. I think the lilac is lovely with your blonde hair and black glasses (just like a pair I had in 8th grade, btw).
ReplyDeleteoh my ... love the dress, the photo, the story.
