I did this when I was a kid. My parents had an old set with the most amazing color plates of insects and chickens and fish and all sorts of things. I loved looking at those beautiful pictures. I loved museums too -- we went often because it was cheap entertainment. Oh well. This post was fascinating too...Leilani Schuck Weatheringtonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04517660684870960794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5456722259350114571.post-18135451411900722752011-09-08T13:42:25.771-05:002011-09-08T13:42:25.771-05:00My feet ache just thinking about the shoes. Rita's comment reminded me of the time my Dad stood in a bathtub with his leather ski boots on. He slept in them and wore them to the office for at least a week while they dried and conformed to his feet. Those boots never hurt him in the least!Dreaminghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02113432418609414054noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5456722259350114571.post-57376467943385655242011-09-08T13:22:28.252-05:002011-09-08T13:22:28.252-05:00I love your historical posts, Far Side. :)I love your historical posts, Far Side. :)LindaGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12203719919661519350noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5456722259350114571.post-45459904636306170632011-09-08T10:30:57.828-05:002011-09-08T10:30:57.828-05:00Ya, you betcha! It is a fantastic multipurpose word. :)

I knew about the shoes--in fact, I heard the first thing they used to do to make them more comfortable was to get their new shoes totally wet and wear them till they dried in the shape of their feet. (I assume that was if you got them in warmer weather.)

I did know the name lucifer for matches, but had never actually seen the box. Would have loved to actually see one of them, too. I didn't know about the ingredients and that they could make people sick!
