Who knew? Or remembered? We were having a problem with our cloths dryer...the clothing was so hot I could barely touch it to fold clothing even during the cool down cycle. Ouch!! Something was a muck.
Far Guy tore apart the front panel to locate a temperature sensor...then we called the appliance shop in town and talked to Bert because he might have the part we needed. It is a stacked Maytag and we have had it a really long time...over twenty years.
Bert said "The soaps and fabric softners today that are used sometimes build up on the dryer screen, clean the screen with soap and water and it may fix your problem."
Low and behold it did the trick. It had been a year maybe two since I last washed the lint screen. I know I have heard this little fix before but did not recall it.
We are especially vigilant and never leave the house when the dryer is on. Years ago I saw a house fire that was caused by a dryer and our oldest daughter lost her first home to a dryer fire when Savannah was a baby.
Smoky Hills were really smoky one day last week. No fires just humidity.
Supper was Far Guy's amazing dip and tacos.
Minnesota weather: High 49F or 9C low 27F or -3C. It was supposed to rain...but it did not.
Far Side
I really should put dryer maintenance on my list of things to check/do annually. I'm like you though and never leave my house with a dryer OR washer running.
ReplyDeleteThat is a good reminder - I need to wash off that lint screen on my dryer. I'm with you - never leave the house with the dryer running. One of my coworkers lost their home to a dryer fire many years ago. We had a bird build a nest right over our outside dryer vent a few years ago. That vent is hidden by a really big thick bush, but we check it more frequently now.
ReplyDeleteEveryone needs a Bert. How fabulous to be able to find a fix. The thermostat wasn’t getting the air it needed to work I guess. Larry was a Bert to lots of people. He’d help them on the phone. I never go out with the dryer on either.
ReplyDeleteThe haze would be depressing. Maybe you’ll get to 50 degrees today. We’re near 80 now.
Good that Far Guy and you are do it yourselfers or you might be buying a dryer
ReplyDeleteSuch a BLESSING that it was just an issue of cleaning the lint screen!! I have a dryer but I never use it. I hang the clothes on a dryer rack. Linda, imagesisee.blogspot.com
ReplyDeletehow nice that it was an easy fix! I am always loathe to give up my older appliances - not just because of the cost of new ones - but also because they just aren't made as well! Bert is a super hero!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder. I heard about this somehow also, and the first time I cleaned mine it actually held water from the build up of fabric sheet residue. Dee
ReplyDeleteI don't think I knew about washing the screen. Mine is coming out and going to the sink momentarily!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the previous comment, I sure could use a Bert. Thanks for the info, I know I'll add washing out the dryer line trap more frequently.
ReplyDeleteIs there a dryer lint screen hidden somewhere? I clean the one I pull out on the top of the dryer before every use.
ReplyDeleteThe pull out dryer screen should be washed with soap and water every couple of months. I remove the lint after every load also:)
DeleteThat is really good advice. I forget to wash mine, but it really does need to be done regularly. My washing machine is acting a fool. I have to put weight on the lid so that the lock will catch; otherwise the machine clicks off. I've called it every name in the book and it still won't lock unless I push down on it. Now what the mess is that all about. Husband says it's a sensor. I may have to put my clothes line back up outside. I'm glad yours was an easy fix!
ReplyDeleteBert saved you some money! Now none of us has a reason to have a clogged lint screen. Ours will get washed today !!
ReplyDeleteI have read so much about all of the fillers that are now in the laundry soap and such... Makes me want to go back to using the old lye that grandmother used to use. lol. (maybe not). glad this was an easy fix for y'all.
