Sewing Challenged

Far Guy went shopping.  He bought some new pants, with cargo pockets for his new fancy smancy phone.  After the pants were washed they needed to be hemmed.  IF he would wear his cowboy boots all the time they wouldn’t be too long.

He lugged down the sewing machine from it’s box upstairs…I reminded him that the cardboard box is not as sturdy as it was 43 years ago…it is really his sewing machine….he bought it.

I had to buy some thread the same color as the new duds. Some pants had to be cut off and then hemmed..one pair I just tipped the hem over once and sewed it.  Far Guy asked me if I shouldn’t be measuring?  Well if he wants them measured vs eyeballed he should take them to a real seamstress.

Now instead of looking at men’s cute butts I am looking at the hems of their pants.

Sewing machine

Far Guy’s sewing machine is not as old and rusty as this one…but it is 43 years old…a Sears Kenmore  practically an antique…if it were a car it would be in mint condition with only a few miles.

I was relieved to read you didn't have to use the machine in the photo!

That is the funniest looking sewing machine I've ever seen. I was wondering if that was the one you used. :) There are two pair of jeans now, folded on my machine to be hemmed. I hate hemming jeans.

The old machines are 1000% better than anything you can buy now.

I really miss my old sewing machine. I bought it in 1969 and finally gave it away in 2013 ( the thread kept jamming and it had been fixed and cleaned numerous times the last few years). It was a portable one and weighed a ton. I was unable to carry it anymore due to a shoulder injury so when we decided to move I gave it to GoodWill. I wasn't using it much anyway. But I tell you there still are times I wish I had it as I hate hand sewing pants hems.

My Singer is at least that old. I've had it since I was probably 10 and it was "vintage" then. My mother and grandmother didn't want me to have a new plastic one and they were right. It's still going strong :-).

Hope he's happy now. Did the length come out right without measuring? I used to have an old Kenmore and wish I still did. It was a workhorse. :-)

Old sewing machines are usually the best, but they are heavy to move around. I can't image carrying a machine in a cardboard box.

My Singer is in a box also...and 50 years old this month. I don't sew like I used too.

I still miss my old metal machine. Finally bit the dust after 40 years. I think it was a White--but that company was also known by another name or bought out or something. These new mostly plastic ones do fancier stuff, but just aren't the same. I have hemmed pants by eyeballing or just folding up a seam, too--LOL! ;)

Far Guy's sewing machine still has a few bells and whistles...not like his Grandmas.

I hate hemming anything! The old machines are the best and the Kenmores are very good. I love making quilts and some crafts but don't like sewing or repairing clothes. Congrats on getting the pants hemmed!

What a lovely sewing machine!

I don't sew - I use duct tape!

Love the machine you photographed. I have a machine that gets very little use. Most of it is made of plastic. Funny how times have changed. I once hemmed some work pants for my ex without measuring. We had to throw them all away and buy more. Hilarious!!

I've hemmed a few pairs of pants in my day but I detest doing it and now just won't do it any more.
I must admit I bought(and have used) that iron-on hemming tape.

Even though I am a sewer, it seems to take ages for me to get around to doing any hemming. I have three Janome machines, and I find them pretty darn good. I don't know how long Janome has been around but these were bought in the last 10 years, maybe 15 at the most.

And I also have used duct tape in a pinch!

I was really hoping that photo was not your real sewing machine. that would be a sewing challenge.

I love to sew but hemming is not one of the tasks that is enjoyable unless it can be done on the machine or in front of the t.v. How did they turn out just 'eyeballing' them?

OMG you make me laugh. Far Guy kinda misread the situation asking about measuring! haha

Laughing at your post at hire a seamstress, lol... I don't measure when it comes to pants either. I put the legs up to pants (from the crotch down) that are fine and hem from that. Hugs, lj PS, I still looks at cute butts....
