The 2016 Ornament

Far Guy designed this ornament.  I was not convinced that we could get it to look like the inspiration. But we came real close.
Christmas Carvings
Here they are in progress.  All six pieces are carved from Basswood.  The pieces are pinned and glued together. Far Guy does the pinning and gluing.  I  put a layer of gesso on them and then paint them.
Tray of carvings
Lady Slipper Ornament
Each one looks a bit different.
Yellow Lady Slippers
The inspiration.
The result is the artist interpretation of what the Lady’s Slipper would look like if it were made from wood.  Each ornament takes between three and four hours to make.  I have a limited number of them for sale. Check out Far Sides Attic and Woodshed Carvings For Sale under the blog header.  We made 78 to send to friends and family and I have them ready to mail and or deliver.

If you would like to be entered in a drawing that will end at 9 PM tonight.  Then leave a comment on this blog post and tell me about your favorite Christmas.  Stay tuned for the winners tomorrow.

Another beautiful thing I miss in Minnesota! Your carving is just gorgeous. (I won't enter this year because I won a loon last year that has a place on our fireplace mantle year around to remind me of beautiful things from Minnesota.). You two are so talented, Connie.

I've already commented and entered your drawing. Just wanted to comment on how cute the lady slipper ornaments look. When I was a child and we visited family in the far northern part of the state, my dad and I would go for walks out in the woods or at the state parks, always on the look out for lady slippers. They were one of my moms favorite wild flowers. Love the ornament. Ranee (MN)

The yellow lady slippers are beautiful that you carved. My favorite Christmas is each and every one, because we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, Who saves us from our sins. Merry Christmas to all!!

Wow, that is a lot of carving, especially those curly bits. Wonderful! When my sister and I were coming across Ontario, we stopped at a scenic area and took a hike down to some waterfalls. I was especially thrilled when I saw a wild orchid growing in the woods, and immediately thought of you! I don't have a special Christmas, but am happy to have been able to spend them all with family.

They're gorgeous. I have such a teeny tiny tree that it wouldn't even fit, so let it go to somebody with a bigger tree. *sniff-sniff* I think they look wonderful! :)

I'll bet you get much satisfaction carving your yellow lady slippers. How long will it be before we see lady slippers again.

They really are wonderful. Your design is perfect. I could see that the spiral parts would take a long time. Another great set of masterpieces done for the season.
