Thanksgiving 2016

We started out our Thanksgiving Day early with a long drive (124 miles).  It was foggy but the roads were good.

While Far Guy helped make lefsa, Adam and I played Othello and then he explained his Geometry Homework to me.  Some of it came back…slowly!   Adam doesn’t like the game Othello.  It was a “no devices” kind of day.  Adam took a nap after dinner.

The boys are all great help with preparation and clean up!  They are learning good life skills.  Noah helped me put together the fruit salad…Granny Smith Apples, Snickers Candy Bars and Cool Whip what is not to like!

Table is set

The tables were set for 15 guests out in the four season porch.  There were four children under the age of five.  You see those balloons at the end of the room, that was for a nerf gun turkey shoot!  There was also a pie in the face game that had children screaming with delight when the adults got cool whip on their faces.  Other guests were Andy’s parents, Andy’s sister and two children and Andy’s brother and wife and two children.

Drumsticks

Not your traditional drumsticks…but I heard they were really yummy!

The menu: A relish tray with pickles, green and black olives, cranberry sauce, smoked turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, corn, green bean casserole, homemade buns, perogies, spaetzle, apple salad and pumpkin bread.

There was also pie, pumpkin and what looked to be apple.  We had a long drive back home and were too full for pie!

We are listening to an audio book “A Man called Ove.”  Far Guy has already finished it, and I am trying to catch up so we can discuss it!  He is patient while I listen to it in the car, he says he doesn’t mind it the second time around.

Lefsa

Fresh lefsa

The 15 year old cat with more than nine lives is looking old and tired.  He has a chair that he uses to get to his food dish.  I was sitting in “his” chair, he sat at my feet and meowed…so I moved out of “his” chair and let him jump up and then I sat back down again.  I took his picture and then scratched his chin for him. He was not purring very much yesterday.

I loved that book so much I read it twice myself. And it sounds like it was a wonderful gathering. Love those "drumsticks." :-)

Great menu (wish I had some lefsa), table setting, and games - fun times and memories.

Great family thanksgiving celebration.

Looks like a wonderful time! Even if Chaucer wasn't crazy about all the company and people stealing his chair--LOL! :)

At first I thought Lefsa were much like crepes but then I looked up a recipe and found they are not at all. They do look good though. And that apple salad with apples, snickers and Cool Whip. Oh, that sounds so yummy.

Sure sounds like a fun day. The menu sounds good too, but there were things I've never heard of and would never be able to pronounce, well maybe lefsa. Perogies, spaetzle, and lefsa. I'll have to read about these. :)

Sounds like a lot of fun and great food; I know the drive was tiring, though.
Sweet photo of the cat. Hope you guys enjoy a peaceful weekend.
Our neighbors prepared two Thanksgiving platters full of food and brought it to our door!

It does sound like it was a great family day. The drive home has to be a downer but yet the listening to the book was a good idea. I question how great those roads could have been in the wintertime in Minnesota.

I also live in Minnesota - and we used to make fruit salad all the time My mom was a purist, though, and insisted on real whipped cream. However, we NEVER ever put in Snickers candy bars and I was wondering where that idea came from. My husband has not had fruit salad that way, but says he has heard of it. We only ever used bananas, apples, pineapple and cherries and peaches, if we had any. Thank you for any information you would like to share. I have been reading your blog for at least a year and follow via email. Ranee (Princeton MN)

My mouth is watering, looking at that lefse! I won't be getting any of that this year, boo hoo. It sounds like you had a lovely Thanksgiving. Sorry there was no room for pie, though! I hope you took a piece home.

Glad you had a good time! Laughed at calling that concoction a fruit salad, oh my ;-) Nelson has a stool to get to his food, we have to make sure we don't move it.

What a long drive--was it 124 miles each way?--but glad the weather cooperated and you were able to make it safely.

About those drumsticks...now that is a recipe I wouldn't mind having!

Looks like a lovely way to spend Thanksgiving.

That looks and sounds like a grand celebration!
I am the only one in my family that still makes lefse. I think I should be sure and schedule it in this year for Christmas.
Old Chaucer has you well trained, I think. Love him while you can. We are still missing our Josy.

What a wonderful Thanksgiving. I have some adults I wouldn't mind hitting with a cool whip pie. Maybe I should suggest that at Christmas. LOL! Probably not. Those turkey legs did look delish! I don't know what lefsa is. I will Google it. I read A Man Called Ove this past year. I loved it. Very much!!

Wow! What a spread! Definitely worth the mileage! Your family knows how to do family get-togethers! A lot of work went into it and it shows.
