Thursday Thoughts

My baby brother and his wife welcomed the birth of their seventh grandchild…a healthy boy…who has no name yet so my brother says he will call him “Seven.”  That makes 19 Great Nephews and Nieces for us.

Far Guy and I have been carving on Christmas Ornaments every day, we have rain forecast again for a few days so I have a stockpile of ornaments to paint when the weather turns bad.  I mowed the lawn yet again and weeded my small flower garden out front.  The so and so squirrels have been tough on those flowers.

We have been watching some of the Olympics…Golf…well I would just as soon watch paint dry.  We enjoyed the sand volleyball and the diving competitions.  I believe we both liked the Olympics better in the olden days where the atheletes could not compete if they were paid for the sport they were in. I know we are old duffers.

Tiger Lily

My Tiger Lily bloomed this year.  The weather was wet enough and the deer left it alone for a change.  When ever I see a Tiger Lily I think of my Uncle Otto as he gave me my first start of these lilies.

The clouds have been impressive lately.  One night on our drive we watched the thunderheads build and collapse.

Moon August 12

I took this photo on August 12…I got the moon and the clouds.

The local small grain fields have been harvested, the air has been full of grain dust but luckily the wind has kept the dust away from our home.

We had our first meal of local sweet corn.  It was quite good.  I froze two small bags.  We did a freezer inventory and discovered we had 22 bags of corn left from last year so we are NOT making a big batch of sweet corn for the freezer this year.

Blueberries are in the freezer for winter.  No raspberries this year…picking was slim around here this year.

Barbara and Roger brought us some Walla Walla Onions that were huge, they are now in the freezer too.  We will enjoy them next winter in chili and on hamburgers.

So much for our hunting and gathering.

How do you freeze Walla Walla onions? Thank you for any help you can give.

Congrats on the new Great Nephew! Seems like all I do around here is mow the lawn - the shade and the humidity are making it really grow fast. Our sweet corn has been for sale for over 2 weeks . I usually freeze a little every time I buy some. However, I have to keep a list of what is in my freezer or else I forget - "old timers disease".

I've watched a bit of the Olympics- swimming, runners and I did see about two minutes of golf the other day. We've had over a week of rainy days, so except for taking my mom to town, I haven't been out much.I'm ready for fall.

My sister loves to watch golf, but I feel like you do about it. Boring. But I loved the gymnastics and swimming, although I didn't watch any of it on TV but on my laptop, just the best parts. Love your pretty tiger lily and congrats on the new grand nephew. :-)

I, too, this Olympic athletes should only be those who are NOT paid to play in their normal life. The Olympics' golf and basketball teams should be college or younger athletes, not professionals.

We liked the Olympics better when it was just amateurs too. Haven't watched at all this year.

I obviously do not follow sports because I didn't even know that they could have paid professional athletes! Well, I have even less desire to watch now.
Raining here and so dark it is like late evening this morning. You should have lots of painting time today--LOL! :)

Lovely lily, until recently we had so many lily beetles that they were hard to grow.

My husband chopped them up and put them in freezer bags and then double bagged the whole works:)

I had to look it up, but it seems that Walla Walla onions don't store as long as 'regular' onions, so seems like freezing is the best way for extended storage.
Training to be an Olympic caliber athlete these days is so intense and time consuming that you would have to be independently wealthy to be able to afford it on your own dime.

Life is good: babies, flowers, rain, harvest, painting!

I agree with you about Olympics of years gone by! Before so many of them were 'drugging' too! I have a had time finding Micheal Phelps to be all that incredible when I can only picture him with a bong! But that is just me!!

I kind of like the name seven:) It was a difficult year around here for any veggies so I am jealous of your corn:) The Olympics are so exciting this year. Hug B

Congratulations to your brother, and congratulations to you, too! I agree with you about the Olympics.
And I love your tiger lily. They always remind me of my Granny. She had lots of them in her garden.
My husband will not use frozen onions. I don't know why, but he won't.
Take care and God bless!

It's always a surprise when you do a freezer inventory. You have 22 bags of corn. We have 20 bags of peaches from last year. We won't be freezing any more this year. We did pick up some juicy ripe ones yesterday but only enough for a couple of desserts.

I'm curious to know it your Walla Walla sweet onions were actually grown in Walla Walla, Washington.

Far Side of Fifty said...

No they were grown in Minnesota from seed:)

My father gave me the seeds for Tiger Lilies...it took many tries to get them started and now I have two patches...Have never heard of Walla Walla onions...how are they different from other onions?

They are a sweet onion grown from seed, mild flavor. We used to grow them when we had the green house:)

Congratulations on the new addition! Gorgeous Tiger Lily and love the cloud picture. I love clouds and especially those big thunderheads. It's been raining here on and off. You are an inspiration getting your Christmas ornaments going. Although it is only like 129 days until the big event! I called for measurements last night for making things for Christmas. Why I didn't do it while they were here? I was distracted most of the time! LOL! More so than usual that is. I didn't watch the olympics this year and I usually watch them....always have but I canceled satellite and the kids were here so that was that. Have a great day! Oh, I think I'm going to watch Fargo tonight. I remember when you watched it and I've been meaning to so I decided Friday nights will be movie nights.
