Little Library

Menahga has a new Little Library!  As you can see it is ready for all the rainy weather we have had.  I hope it survived the straight line winds that went through their town the other night.

Little library

This Little Libray sits right outside of the Historical Museum in Menahga (MEN ah gaw).

As a child I loved to read but not many books were available to me. The summer before I entered third grade, we lived in Stuart Iowa for the summer.  It was there I was introduced to my first Public Library.  I loved going there and wondering what great adventures were in all those books.

Someone once asked me what my perfect room would be?  A library room with huge comfy chairs and a fireplace, with books from floor to ceiling and a lock on the door…so I could lock myself in and just read.

I still like holding a real book in my hand, but I read often on my Kindle…all those books in one spot that I can grab and go…pure heaven.

I love the little free libraries. It's great fun to google and see them in every corner of the world. I have fond memories of walking to the public library when I was a kid. I like your idea of a library room!

That's a cute one and larger than most. I sure hope no water got to the books. When I lived in Minnesota I used to buy a few of my favorite children's books at garage sales and keep them in my car to add to one of these when I saw it. I think Little Free Libraries are a great addition to the world!

We also have some of those little library thingies around our town. I pass them by and sometimes stop to see the titles. :-)

Hi:
I have a Kindle, too, but I still prefer a real live book, where you can see at a glance how long the book is going to be, and easily go back to reread something. A feature I really like is the lighted "page" so that you don't need a reading light.
When I was growing up, we lived in a fairly large town and I read every book in the children's library section, so they gave me a card to the adult library. Quite an accomplishment for a kid!

Reading has always been my favorite thing. I have never seen one of those little libraries but they seem like a good idea. I wonder though how many books are never returned?

You just described my perfect room too. I told my husband that in our next house I don't want a dining room, we never use it, I want a library.

I didn't know you were a reader! I can't remember when I first entered a real library. The old country school had a two shelf glass doored case with about 50 books. I read them many times.

You described what I would want for my perfect room to a T. Speaking of tea, that would be a nice addition along with a cold stormy couple of days. Heaven. I am most happiest when I have a pile of unread books waiting for me. I often have mixed feelings when reading a really good book - read like crazy to get to the end and sad when the book is finished. Heh. Over the past few years, I have started re-reading books. That is something I never thought I would do. Sometimes a good book deserves multiple readings over time. I love the little libraries that are being set up all over. Maybe I can encourage our town to try the same idea. This one is really well done. Ranee (MN)

My mother took me to the library at a early age, I loved to go there.
So I started my three children early. Yes I read mostly on my e-book now.
Out of three only one grown child still goes to the library and took her children.

I am so like you! I love a good book, in paper form or on my kindle!! I always wanted a real reading room. All warm and comfy and silent as a library!

What a cute Little Library! Folks have really stepped up to have them on their property, build them, take care of them, or donate. I am taking a walk down the street a few blocks later today to investigate a new one. I tend to donate books to them twice a year. And...I am right on board with your idea of the perfect room. Wanna guess what will happen to GN's room when the time comes? ;-)

They either must not have felt secure enough in their construction or maybe it was still drying? You can't have one of those Little Libraries and not have it be weather proof. The plastic tarp is worrisome.

Ah, yes! Only my library would also have a giant roll top desk filled with stationery, inks, and pens, too--LOL! ;) Heaven!!

I've always loved reading too and like you, grew up with little choices. As an adult I would order books from Uni. extension library I think it was called. They would send out my precious parcel of books and when I was done all I had to pay was return postage. Didn't have access to a public library until well into my twenties.

I'm with you - I'd love to have a library in my house. I don't like reading on devices at all. I find them very distracting.

Some of my favorite memories are about libraries. I loved to read as a child and I still do. I now prefer my Nook to a real book. I like the size of the print and the backlight! I have a room in my house we call "The Reading Room" No floor to ceiling bookcases but plenty of books. And sadly, just a futon to read on. But it will do for us. For now!

Someone in my neighborhood has one of those "little libraries" outside of their house. You can take a book and leave one you no longer want. It's great!

I usually don't keep books that I have finished reading. Now I read almost exclusively on my Kindle - electronic books.
A neighbor has one of those little libraries but I have never seen anyone use it. We checked it our when it was new but didn't see anything we were interested in.
I wish I liked libraries more. I guess so many books just overwhelms me. I usually buy books.

You and I have the same perfect room in mind. I'm working on mine, by the way. Almost every bookcase we own is already double stacked, and we have bookcases in every room in the house that doesn't have plumbing ;)

I agree that Little Libraries are a great addition to the World! There is one by the Walker Post Office and also in front of the Emmaville Store.

I love those little libraries! I'd have one here if we weren't so out of the way.

We have a number of those around town. I remember the bookmobile being my favorite!

We have them in our area now. A brand new one was installed up by the old railroad station. Our neighboring town had one for a few years. I am sure that they could get loaded down with books if people would borrow one and briging back two or more.i
