Pine Cones and Boxes

I like auctions, I like bidding.  I should have been a picker…no not a nose picker a person that picks stuff out for antique shops.

Recently I was on a quest.  Shiny Brites made a pine cone ornament way back when…probably before WWII.  I didn’t have one.

I bid on a group of six pine cones online …then I bid again and yet again. and maybe a few more times…I kinda lost track…then I left the house so I wouldn’t bid anymore.  Came back a few hours later and low and behold I was the winning bid.

Old ornaments

The blue ones and the red ones are Shiny Brites.  The other two multi colored cones were made in West Germany.  They arrived in the mail this week…I was so excited…Merry Christmas to me!  I am not certain how many color pinecones Shiny Brite made… red, blue and gold for sure.

I needed wanted hoard boxes.  Of course for the new ornaments…and the boxes only come in groups of three…and they jumped right off the shelf into my cart at Wallyworld.

 Santa Box

Kinda makes you smile doesn’t it?  It is all glittery and everything…and the hat matches up no matter which way you put the lid on…idiot proof!

The Cousin’s Christmas Party was Tuesday night, I took pumpkin bread out of the freezer and bought some cookies for the potluck.  It was a nice turn out. Aunt Grace is in the hospital so she couldn’t attend, everyone else was there my Dad, Aunt Anna, Aunt Lila and Aunt Sharon are the surviving remnant.   Far Guy didn’t attend…too many perfumed women.

I am no further with decorating, but I did get the living room cleaned really good so I might be able to put a few things up sometime soon. I still have time.

Yes, Merry Christmas to you! I vaguely remember these on our tree when I was a kid, but it's been ages since I've seen such things. :-)

Wheee fun and I love that box! I had no idea Shiny Bright made pinecones but now that I see them I do remember seeing those around. I think of you every time I come across one of the few of the old sb ornaments I have left and I still use their box to store other fragile ornaments. Oh and the rose ornament that looks so fragile yesterday isn't really, it is packed in tissue in it's own square box and I've had that puppy now for almost 20 years!

I'm so happy for you! Those are gorgeous and I love pine cones in any size, shape or form but those are especially pretty. I like your boxes too. I haven't been to a Christmas party or any party in years. If I was up North there would be plenty to go to. Holidays make me homesick not for the parties but for the people. Your blog always makes me feel like I'm partly home....thank you!

I was at a gun and antique show this fall and there was a table full of Shiny Brights in their original boxes...I thought of you. I could have been a picker too...or a horse dealer

Beautiful ornaments! Do you have a Hobby Lobby close by? Their Christmas decor is 50% off this week. It is a great way for them to be able to clear their shelves as well as a wonderful bargain for us!!!

Inquiring minds must know.... how do you know if an ornament is a Shiny Brite?

I so admire your collection. Can't wait to see a photo of the tree.
The Santa box is gorgeous. You're putting me in the Christmas spirit.

So happy you found a new treasure. Tom and I put up our tree yesterday. We set it up on our front porch so it is part of our outside decorations. Time to get started on cleaning inside.

Hi Shirley, Usually by the design or shape, their designs were unique as were their shapes. Most of their caps say Shiny Brites...but of course caps can be switched from one ornament to another. They only did certain colors too.

The nearest Hobby Lobby is 60 miles away.

Those boxes and tins that come out in the Dollar stores are so cute. I manage to find some that fit a couple of jars of jam and they make nice little gifts. Congrats on being the winning bid!

Sometimes the search is as interesting as the find. Now the search is to see if there are more colors.

I have many pinecone and nut ornaments and love them. I like to do a natural tree with birds and such.
We have the neighborhood party tomorrow night and need to come up with an appetizer today.
Happy Holidays to you and your family Connie.

Congratulations on the winning bid. Those pine cones are cute. I remember my grandmother having some of those on her tree ---- it was one of the 1950's tinsel trees! LOL

I have a number of pinecone ornaments in silver but alas, they are all newish. I like them anyway. But there is something special about the genuinely old ones.

What treasures! I've never seen the three colored ones. I do have one pine cone one and it looks like the top one in your photo.

Those pinecones are beautiful! I am glad you won that auction :) I decorate the same way (have to start out clean) then decorate.

You are a Shiny Brite expert! And have, by far, the largest collection I know of.

Your cousins Christmas sounds fun. What a blessing to be able to get together with extended family so often.

Those acorns are really neat. I have been looking at magazines at the bookstore that have Christmas trees on the cover. I scout out what there is out there. This year they didn't photograph very many trees with antique ornaments. I am putting my bubble lights on the big tree this year for the first time. We don't have ornaments on it yet but the lights are nice.

Didn't know about the SB pine cones. I'm counting down the days until I can bring my decorations up from the basement!
