Adam: Basketball and A Gene

We traveled up north for Adam's basketball tournament.  Have I said before that Adam is quite tall for his age?  Well he is and with some practice and a bit more confidence he could control the game.
This is a basket during practice, he is number 31.
He made several baskets during the game, none of which I caught on camera ...sometimes it is just so exciting to watch!

Yes he is  real tall.
The ref pointed out the height difference before the jump ball.

He he is a head and a ball taller than everyone else. C 'mon Adam give the little guys a chance!

Adam
This was the last game of the tournament.  All the boys had been playing since 8 AM, after this game was over (they lost by 4 points) they were headed off as a group for some food.

They played a really good game.  We were glad we could be there.

This week we learned that Adam is our only Grandchild that is a carrier for the Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency.  ( Everyone else tested MM which is normal.)  Adam is a MZ the same as his mother.   If he or his mother should have problems in the future the Doctors will be able to treat them right away before lung deterioration begins.  It is our hope that they will live a full, happy, normal life and the one itty bitty tiny gene won't make a difference.   Was I sad ?  Yes I was...both Far Guy and I prayed long and hard that the grands would ALL be spared....four were and one wasn't.  Yes I think it is unfair...but I am not in charge...God is.

Beyond sorry to hear about Adam's gene, but glad there is a treatment. Maybe they will come up with a even better treatment before long. Researchers are working on many gene-related issues that only those affected know about.

But how good that the gene was spotted and his family is aware of it.
And what a nice looking boy, by the way.

Oh Connie, so sorry to read about Adam's gene. Knowing aboutnit this early gives him awareness and that helps when the time is right for treatments. And, like Paula said, advancements are made all the time in medicine, so there's a lot of possibility to look forward to by the time he needs help. God is truly in charge. I'm with younon that. Peace.

How fun to watch your grandson's basketball game! I'll bet he's going to do real well in this sport. Sorry to hear about him carrying the gene, but now that you know he can be monitored and hopefully stop the deterioration before it starts.

I think it's really fortunate for Adam that he's aware of having that defective gene in time to help him stay healthy as long as possible. He sure is a tall one, all right! :-)

I am sorry too but so thankful that your knowledge of the testing will not only help your grandson but countless others you have reached thru your blog. So happy that you could attend the game. It has been a privilege to watch all your grands mature. God bless you and Gene today.

I too am so sorry to learn that Adam caries that gene. And I also think that finding this out early instead of much later is good and with all the research that is going on we hope that a cure or better treatment are in the works. God bless you all.

The news on Adam hits hard. Now wonder you enjoyed his basketball game. You've done the only thing you could do and it's right.

As others have said, having the information that your grandson has a gene that can cause trouble is a very fortunate thing in the long run. He certainly is tall compared to his peers. Glad you got to attend his game and enjoy watching him play. Have a good Sunday. It's 77 degrees here!

Four were spared and one wasn't. It must be a hard thing to accept. I hope all turns out well in the future for both your daughter and grandson.

I'm sorry too that Adam has that gene. He is such a tall good looking boy. He makes the other boys look short. Thanks for visiting Lynn's blog.

Because of what you have learned, Adam will be prepared. That is a good part of your legacy.

Sorry to hear about Adam, and at least now, he can be checked up and anything can be stopped in its tracks. He looks healthy and good at basketball!

Looking on the bright side, knowledge is a powerful thing. Hope Adam continues on with the basketball.

Knowledge is a big part of the preventative medicine. I am assuming life style will mean staying away from occupations that threaten the lungs. I wished they all had been non carriers but their knowing is a huge advantage. I would hope strides will be made in finding treatments that are easier to have for it. Medicines that keep my wife's heart going maintain her life regardless that it is a deficient heart function and she should should not be surviving the condition.

So sorry to hear about the dang gene! I will say a prayer that it remains dormant his entire life! I love going to basketball games especially supporting the local teams.
