Lilac

We have one of those Mid to Late Lilac varieties.

It blooms early to mid June.  It is dark in bud and when it blooms it is more of a pink than purple.

Late Lilac Blooms

Syringa x prestoniae ‘Donald Wyman’

I used to order bareroot trees and shrubs from a Nursery in Montana…often they would throw in a few extras that may or may not live.  This one lived.  Trees and shrubs in pots are labor intensive…we phased them out after about five years.  They also had to be stored just so over the winter….basically a pain in the butt.

I hate to see former customers this time of year.  “I bet you miss the greenhouse business?”   NO.  “ How many plants do you have now?”  In pots …none.  “REALLY.”

Really…you should never make a business out of your favorite hobby…you will burn out.

For sure on the business/hobby - - - - or when you give it your all plus some - - - you burn out and it takes a couple of years to re-energize or care about anything besides your own home! Or maybe that's just me. We volunteered a bit in the church library last year but have not had a desire to this year. I really do miss the people who used to come in to visit us and get books but I don't miss having to be somewhere at a certain time - - - and having to stay there on my feet the majority of the time. It was a very good time and God had called me to be there and I know that. He worked through me to reach a lot of people but I am glad that it is someone else's turn right now!

We have the same kind growing in our yard. However, they are done blooming for the year. When a person burns out doing something, it is definitely time to do something else. And you are right about not making a business out of your favorite hobby; cuz then it isn't a hobby anymore.

I remember when I began teaching skydiving and suddenly it wasn't nearly as much fun as before. Same thing in the gardening business, it seems. Our lilacs are long gone now, so I'm enjoying seeing your late bloomer. :-)

I have the same lilac and love that it doesn't sucker. The blooms are pretty, but they don't have the lilac scent.

I always thought you should be in a business you feel passion for? Lovely lilac and I can almost smell the aroma.

So much for the “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life." quote:) I am starting to feel the same about the jam making. Very pretty lilac, I was going to ask about the smell, but TT above answered that for me.

Beautiful lilacs! Yes, it is true if you make a job of your hobby, it won't be fun anymore. That's why my photography is just that - a hobby.

We have our framing business basically closed. And yet I am framing one more wedding collage for someone who has had all the other children done by me. I have other things that keep coming in from a lady who loves cowboy posters and they are easy to do. We have succeeded to head off all the labor intensive things that we probably didn't make money from when we were done. I loved working at the nursery for a grocery store in Johnston one summer but a third of the people were always bad to work with. Life changes keep happening and we are just going with the flow.

I love lilacs. I think you are very right about not making a hobby you love into a business. You obviously worked very hard...too hard!

That Lilac does have a pretty pink color. I really want a Lilac bush. The Lady Slippers are beautiful! Don't they look just like a dainty yellow slipper! Amazing!

You run into some very neat stuff when you deal in plants.

So pretty. We planted one in the fall. It's still pretty little!

I haven't seen many of the usual lilacs in bloom yet - seems late. They sure are pretty - I like the smell but only outside (too much for inside). Hope you are staying cool in this heat.

I knew a lot about Minnesota plants and gardening Up North and now here I am Down South where I can't even identify half the stuff! Lilacs smell so wonderful and I miss mine blooming and wafting into the house. Enjoy!

Could almost smell it. Doing something for money that you used to do just for fun...well, it can often take the "fun" right out of it. So true.

Ahh but it is nice to have those late bloomers - seems like the early ones are here and gone so quick and I so adore the smell of them!
