Amish Quilts

Next door neighbor Jo and I went to an Amish Quilt sale…up north.

Of course they were auctioning off other things too…fresh produce especially potatoes, green beans, onions, broccoli, eggplant and even some cauliflower.

There was oak furniture…complete bedroom sets, quilt racks and shelves.  Baskets, breadboards, birdhouses, homemade rugs and potholders.

Every kind of pickle you can imagine, pickled beets, jams and jelly.

I was respectful of their dislike of cameras.

The quilts were in the back of the sawmill…yes the auction sale was inside a huge working sawmill.

Quilts

Most of the ground where the quilts were displayed was covered in carpeting.  Three fourths of the building was set up with bleachers and chairs for bidders.  One fourth was for the auction platform and the quilts. There were 155 quilts for sale.

The quilts were brought up one by one and held high in the air.  While we were there the most expensive quilt sold was $525.00 and that was for one called the Minnesota Star.  Most quilts were selling for around $200 give or take.  After the quilt was sold it was bagged and marked with your number for pick up after you paid your bill. All quilts are hand made and hand quilted…no machines involved.

Royal Crown Quilt

If you are a connoisseur of fine Canadian whisky you will recognize the bags that Crown Royal comes in. Who woulda thunk it?

Pieced wall hanging

There were many pieced quilt tops and wall hangings.  Jo held this wall hanging up so I could take a photo.

There were two auction rings one inside and one outside.  Outside they were selling lumber, misc tools, what not and chickens and rabbits.

It was a fun day…no I didn’t buy a thing…other than lunch.

Hmmm, the Crown Royal quilt is a bit shocking! Maybe they had no idea, just some pretty fabric? You have great willpower -- no purchases. :-)

Gosh, I love quilts. I envy you your day. I'm surprised I don't see what I've always thought of as Amish quilts - predominately black backgrounds with jewel-toned solid blocks. Maybe they don't sell as well to the "English."

I would have enjoyed the auction with you two. Love looking at the quilts.
Have a good day.

T-shirts seem to be a hot item now for quilters, using grandchildren's t-shirts for a keepsake. Interesting results.

Oh my, I would have loved going to this auction. I doubt I would have purchased anything but lunch as well, but it sure is fun to see beautiful quilts.

Makes me wonder about the maker of the bag quilt...were those her husband's empty drink bags? If so I know why she quilts.

I absolutely love that wall hanging.

Is this a normal auction or are the Amish as many people having a rough time, too?

I love hand-made quilts, too. Impressed that you didn't end up buying one!

I thought of your Doggy when we were at the crook and whistle trial on Friday!
I would love an amish bunny for its fibers

I would have bought a quilt, since I love them when they are well made, and these sure look like they are. Those are a lot of Crown Royal bags, all right. I guess Amish don't mind drinking, eh? :-)

That is pretty funny re the Crown Royal bags. I'm guessing that quilt went for one of the lower prices, it doesn't look very intricate. Some beautiful quilts there, a nice outing for sure. I wouldn't have bought one either, but have bought a quilt or two from the thrift store:)
The Mennonites here have a big fundraiser each year, and have a quilt auction also, as well as auctioning livestock and food and other things.
