On Geraniums

With all the rain we have been having the Wild Geraniums are showing off.

Wild Geraniums

Geranium maculatum a perennial native wildflower.

Many people confuse Geraniums.

Here is another true Geranium

ALPENGLOW Geranium

This is a perennial geranium.  Geranium sanguineum ‘Alpenglow’

Bike with geraniums

This is NOT a Geranium.  It is a Pelargonium.  Many people call them Geraniums, but if they were ever to order plants…they would order Pelargoniums.  We American’s have our terminology all messed up when it comes to Geraniums and Pelargoniums.

Most people don’t know the difference..they ask for Geraniums and the plant people give them Pelargoniums and they are happy.  Confusing for sure.

Whoops. Yes, that last picture looks might like the "geraniums" I have in my pots outside!
Oh well, "A rose by any other name. . . . ?"

I love the wild geraniums. Now I have a name for what I see on the roadside. Yes, the names and people selling them are confusing

The leaves of all three are very different. I have always loved geraniums, but I guess I really love pelargoniums. :-)

Not just you Americans. The Brits are just as confused. My favourite is Geranium sylvaticum album.

And now I am not sure what I planted in my pot out back. :-) I hope you are feeling lots better!

I can tell you are feeling a lot better (I hope) because you are sending pictures of flowers and talking about them and educating us. I do hope every day will find you both feeling much better.

I did know that, and like you I have some very happy wild geraniums. Unless they've floated away in the last couple of hours....

And so you can fool a lot of the people most of the time. I think the experts get some of these identifications wrong from time to time.

I didn't know that and my mom sure doesn't either. Come to think of it- neither does the store where she buys them, cause the signs say"geraniums"! Wonder why the confusion? I think I like the real deal better than the fakes.
