Wistful Wednesday: Mom in 1952

This is an old photo of my Mother taken in 1952.  See those diapers on the line?  Some of those were mine.  Some of them belonged to my aunt and uncle who were two months younger than me.  Three babies were spoiled that winter of 1951-1952.

By spring Mom lost all her baby fat and used a safety pin to keep her jeans skinny at the waist.

I love the smell of clothing that has been dried on the line outside.  Sadly I don’t have a clothes line here, oh I suppose I could stretch a bit of clothesline between a couple of trees…but then I would have to iron.

Clothes on the line. No better smell. I have a friend who loves it so much that when the time comes, she has refused to move to a senior community unless it allows clothes lines.

Clothes dried outside have the best smell ever. Wish I had a clothes line outside.

I also love the smell and feel of clothes hung on the line. It's been a long time since I've done that, though. Love that picture of your mom, with her jeans pinned up. :-)

I love that old photo of your mom! so precious! I don't mind not having a clothes line which leaves anything hung on it a target for the birds! ::-)

I too miss being able to dry clothes outside on a line. There is nothing better than the smell of sheets line dried in the sun and wind. Our modern dryers are wonderful but who can even tell when the sheets and pillowcases are clean because they don't have that nice fresh outside smell! The old days weren't all bad! I do remember a wash freezing on the line but that was OK too. They unbent after being in the house a while.

Just wait for a windy day to hang out your clothes, and then you don't have to iron:) Although I rarely iron on a calm day either. Most things, if you give them a good shake before you hang them out, are fine. I've always had a clothesline, and it seems so so wrong to use the dryer on a sunny day. I'm surprised to read in the comments before mine that no one seems to use a clothesline anymore. I notice a good 'drying day', like yesterday, with sun and a breeze, and will check to see if I have enough to put in a load.
And oh, your mom is so young and skinny and cute!

Me, too! The smell of hot sun and wind is the best smell ever. I shake them good when I hang them up and forget about ironing. Cute photo of your mom. My mom was hanging up diapers that summer, too.

Such a gorgeous picture of your mom, they always looked glamorous in those days, even hanging up the laundry.

Now I wonder how many people have a photo of their diapers?

I can't wait to get the warmer weather for good, because I do hang the clothes out on the line and I love that fresh smell when I bring them in!

I know this seems strange to say, but your mom looked so young! I suppose it's all relative...

That is the sweetest picture ever of your mom. Her waist was tiny! I love my clothesline but you are right about ironing! Jeans dried on a clothesline are so stiff they will stand alone!
