Woodcarving: Bark Carving In the Round

I took another woodcarving class.  This one is different.  Two pieces of bark are glued together and then you carve.  When you have it roughed in..you heat the piece up to soften the hot glue and take it apart..do your windows etc..and then glue it together again and finish it up. I know it sounds complicated.

It also helps if you are a person that sees in three dimensions..me not so much.

What do you see??

Bark Carving one

Well I saw a pine tree and a stone chimney.

Chimney and a tree

Then on the other side a deck and a house.

Bark Carving three

Right now I am at a stand still with it.  The class is over, I missed one day of class because I had to work..but the instructor is available for questions anytime.  I am not sure that I enjoy carving on such a large piece of bark. My hand gets tired.  I will happily go back to my little houses.  This bark came from South Dakota, I picked out the lightest piece he had..heavy wood is harder to carve. Far Guy took the class too..I will show you his creation when it is done. I have no doubt that he will be done way before me:)

That does look a lot harder to carve than a small piece of wood. I look forward to seeing it finished, and what Far Guy did with his. :-)

That is great! I have always wanted to carve. Someday I will.

I saw an owl in a tree in the first picture so I'm probably no good at this. I would have carved the owl and just left the rest as the tree he was sitting in.

Wow, when you asked what do you see, I saw wood!!! I guess I don't have much of an imagination. You had a vision, and it turned out beautiful. Enjoy the day!

Beautiful. I admired your efforts, I certainly couldn't do it.

I am not good at visualizing. I'm with, Muffy. I saw wood. LOL!
Be sure and let us know how both of your projects turn out--with photos! I've never known woodcarvers before. Now I can say I know two! ;)

Gail and I think alike - I saw that owl, too. But, seeing one shot from a camera's perspective is a whole lot different than what you saw as you turned it and visualized the possibilities. I am in awe of your work! I'm looking forward to seeing more.

You are good Connie. I didn't see what you saw but I saw there were lots of possibilities. I bet you enjoy that. Can't wait to see the finished project.

I think it's cool that you tried a new craft. At first, I saw an owl on a fence post. Enjoy!

I thought I saw two hands in prayer in the first picture. I see a Christmas tree in the last picture. Maybe a snail or roly-poly in the middle picture.
Haha!
How is that for random? I do not make a good carver. ;o)

The color of the wood is very pretty. That is a project I have not had a desire to learn but I enjoy looking at your creations!

Your carving is amazing....I saw nothing at first until you started carving so obviously I would still be standing there scratching my head if I'd taken the class! LOL! I love what you've done so far. It does look like a large piece!

I'm really POOR at 3 dimensional stuff - at a push all I could see was a hand holding a banana ;-) Keep up with it and let us see how it turns out. I love your little houses :-) Jo
