Being Polite

It has been a busy week at the museum.  The Magazine Editor will show up sometime Monday.  Apparently she is touring the Northwoods in a Recreational Vehicle and it must be returned on Monday ..so our tour will go on sometime before that but no one knows exactly what time..so I am “on call.”  I think it is one of those hurry up and wait things…it really torks me off that I must be at the beck and call on my day off.  Hopefully the publicity will be worth it.

I spent over an hour on the phone getting the wireless service back into the building after hooking up the new computer.  Part of that time was spent spelling words over the phone to some customer service person at D-Link that did not have a good handle on the English language.  I was polite.  I did not scream or demand to speak to his supervisor..I was patient he is most likely supporting at least ten people with one paycheck.

I met some nice people this week..tourists whiling away some time at the museum.  I smiled and welcomed them.

I hate the phone..it rings and I answer politely…I answer all the little old ladies questions about hours and days we are open.  People call and want me to do appraisals over the phone, like I can see their item that they are describing that is one of a kind. I hate the phone.  A salesman the other day wanted to sell me fine china for the Museum Gift Shop and didn’t like my “No” for an answer…I finally told him I would buy every wooden musket he had in stock..sadly he didn’t have any.

Of course since the week was going so well one idiot had to be a jerk, one of the know it all holier than thou brainiacs and he took TWO of my Tootsie Rolls and never left a donation. A$$ Whole.

I buy my own bag of Tootsie Rolls too..it isn’t like I get reimbursed for them or anything.  I almost told him to put them back if he wasn’t going to be polite.  Yesterday I found where someone stashed two Tootsie Roll wrappers..I bet it was him:(IMG_1841

I have been scanning your blog quickly lately because I haven't been on the computer much. Just noticed the beautiful photo of the Showy Lady Slippers at the top along with the Yellow Lady Slippers. Hope all goes well on Monday. Are you going to show the writer the bridal gown collection?

Your blog is always first on my Reader, so I'm greeting every morning as I drink my tea by your latest adventures, Connie. You are polite, I'm sure, but not everybody deserves it! The old Tootsie Roll guy probably doesn't know how to use a trash container either. I can hear rumblings about this job all the way over here. Do you think you'll sign up for a third year? :-)

I worked with the public for all of my career. I know how hard it is to hold your temper when you would like to say exactly what you are thinking. I used to keep a bowl of candy on my desk when I was working and the same ones took hands full each time they passed by. keep smiling and I will be thinking of you on Monday. Hope it goes well.

I asked at a cheese place politely if I could sample they said yes indeedy, when I did they looked at me like I had stolen something, I called for the manager she knew me from childhood said no problemo at all, I bought something there for my hubby for a Father's day gift and then they started acting like I was not a shoplifter. I figure when candy is displayed it is ALWAYS FOR THE KIDDIES, well I am 64 and no kiddie so i leave it alone, people who do crap like that are the ones who nickel and dime grocery clerks left and right I know my hubby just retired from working most of his life doing that work, a pox on those idiots and manerless people they always get their Karma I have seen it in my lifetime...I love love your blog, you are a beautiful clearly artistic and kind human being, your hubby and Chance the doggie sound so sweet, why can't more people be like you and your hubby and sweet dog, this world needs MORE PEOPLE such as you and yours, why or for the love of God can't their be people with manners and spunk, no we get out here in the Pacific Northwest a bunch of thoughtless, mannerless Yahooos..oh well take it easier, your efforts for the Museum you man is greatly appreciated...just saying..happy mothers day very late and happy fathers day tomorrow to your hubby and give Chance a big hug and smooch from a big doggie lover..ciao~~~~~~~~~~!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah the unwashed public, well now we know why they call them the unwashed.

People are....well just people. And I am trying to think of it this way, if they did't act to badly then what would we have to blog about?

You held back very well, congrats.

My first day as a volunteer at the our little museum (outside of the blog, that is) I asked what most people do...he said...'Sit at that little desk and wait for someone to come in." I said: Nope, won't do that...I have to have SOMETHING to do! So for three hours I was in heaven...I filled up a data base that needed more information, I sorted and cataloged old photos, I dreamed I was back in time ... one of those photos was a panoramic of 1900 Delta, I photographed displays and made signs and even answered the phone. We had two visitors. I found intensely wonderful displays that I never saw before and pointed them out to the two visitors.

The whole experience was hugely fun!!!

ahhh - - the public - - without them, we wouldn't have our jobs. With them, our job is definitely more challenging. Someone told me that I was the same with all of them - - very nice and welcoming. But they don't see how I am dealing with it inside. Some are definitely raising my blood pressure and hurting my health!

You remind me of the duck...serene on the surface but paddling like mad underneath! I'm wondering, too, if you'll take on a third term. Happy Father's Day to Far Guy. I hope he has a pain-free day.

I think we get the most upset with the people we expect should most definitely know better. Bad enough he took them without a donation, but the hide the trash--tsk! tsk! Other than that, you had a stellar day of restraint. I'm wondering, too, if you will sign up for another year? Best of luck on Monday.

There's one in every thousand or so. The trick is to not let them ruin your day. Not easy, I know.

You deserve some kind of great reward for putting up with that kind of stuff all week and not blowing your stack! I guess that's why they pay you the big bucks!

When you find one in most cases you find a whole family or generation of impolite people.

You go girl! I have little patience for rudeness these days or is there just more of it? I don't socialize much so when I do go out I am always amazed at 1)the price of things 2) and the lack of manners of the adults. I find the children and the locals here very polite but the "retirees" that have migrated here can be so rude I stand there in shock! Were they raised by wolves? Next time, (hopefully there won't be one) when he shows up....hide the Tootsie Rolls or tell him he owes you as they weren't free! LOL! They were a dollar each and somehow the sign got knocked down! LOL!
