Guitar Follow–Through

Ah tweens..their moods are as variable as shifting sands in the desert.  Hormones..gone whacky..causing some tweens to sleep and grow taller all at the same time.

Noah takes guitar lessons every week.  He practices..he has been getting ready for “ a jam.”  I suppose if it were a piano it would be called a recital..but it is a guitar so it is called a jam.

Noah practicing

I went up to his room..knocked on the door and he let me in to watch him practice.  He confided in me that he was real tired of playing the same piece of music over and over.  He got his full set of braces last Thursday.  His mouth is sore..he is tired..he had strep throat last week too..I told his Mother that I think he may have mono.

The show must go on.

I hoped he would be number two or three or five..but he ended up being tenth.  Way too much time to think.

Kennys music jam

Noah did great..he played Sweet Child o’ Mine..a piece that I had never heard before…something from the 1980’s.   The old guys on stage did a marvelous job accompanying all the students as they played…most of the music was from the 1950’s and 1960’s.

I was very proud of Noah.  He followed through..and even smiled a couple of times during his performance.

I was proud also of his parents for not caving in..they were supportive and encouraging and firm.

I could never have done anything like that when I was twelve.  I was way too shy. So Rock On Noah! :)

Music lessons are such a good discipline. They teach persistence, and the need for practice, but also show rewards, like the recital-I mean, jam that will be remembered.

I always want to go first or at least up towards the front if I have to give a speech or perform in front of people. I get bouts of stage fright and you're right: too much time to think can be deadly. Congratulations to Noah for having done so well, even with all that time to think!

Congrats to Noah on a good job! Learning to play music in front of people is the best!!!!! Now get him some new music other than his lesson music so he can practice both lessons and stuff he wants to play!

Good Job Noah! I know that song. I grew up with a father that plays guitar and so does my brother and now his son does too. It is a gift and it looks like Noah has it. Poor little guy. Hope he's feeling better.

Meredith took piano lessons until she was 16. Not willingly I might add. She quit the minute she was allowed to, and never touched it again. She was extremely shy, but we were amazed how she put on a performance at her concerts.
As for myself, well I took an evening crash course on piano one winter, maybe 20 years ago. When it came to playing our chosen song at the end, I fell apart:(
I hope Noah keeps it up and enjoys it!

I bet Noah is having a blast with the guitar. I have one grandson turning 14 this month. I can't believe it. They are growing up too fast.

I feel for Noah and his braces. Oh, how I remember that torture! And strep throat too.... not fair!
But, hooray for him with his lessons and the jam session. What a great experience, meaning, one that is good for him and may make a difference in his future.

Mono is so very sneaky. I had it as a teenager when it was known as the kissing disease (that was impossible in my case) Thanks for the kinds words for Barb. The oncologists at Mayo today had nothing but positives. Thinks are looking up. :)

Wow, he is brave, but I know as well as anyone, married to a guitarist as I am, that there is a definite thrill attached to getting up on a stage and jamming away to the guitar. Our youngest is now primed and ready to assume his father's role, and already knows some tunes on his little electric Santa brought him. It's a good way to release all that testosterone, I think. We have much to look forward to! :)

Congratulations to Noah! I know how hard it is for people his age to get up and perform. I worked with his age for 37 wonderful years.

That is a pretty neat "recital"! I mean - - to be the star of a band and have backups is pretty cool. I did not know this is what guitar students did.

It is so great that Noak is learning the electric guitar. Our boys were in our school Jazz band and they did solos all the time. They did get a lot more bravado as they grew older.

Congratulations to Noah. I think playing in a musical recital or jam is a hundred times harder than playing a sport. At least for me it would be and I am rotten at sports.

Guitar wasn't an option when I was a kid. Wow! That would have been cool!

Never heard of the song so I had to go to youtube...no wonder! Guns and Roses. A band that was so far after my time--LOL! I would have had no clue if he did a good job or not, to be honest. Never heard the song--ROFL! ;)

I hate being up in front of people. More power to him!! :):)

Takes lots of dedication to excel in music. Sounds like Noah is on the right track. Just makes our old grandma hearts so proud to see our grands do good. Hope he gets to feeling better soon.
