Carving: The Lady Slipper

Over the summer I was able to go to carving but never for very long..I always had something else to do that day ..grocery shopping..laundry..life..you get the picture.

The group began a new project.  Byron learned how to carve a Lady Slipper ( the flower).  He brought in blanks..those are the wooden pieces that must be carved…and tutored the rest of us as we carved.  Most everyone is done..except me.

Here are mine.

My Lady Slipper parts

It is a work in progress.  I am on my second set of petals..those wingy looking things up in the right hand corner.  The first set..I carved and carved..until they got really tiny..too tiny to look good.

This is Far Guys..I took a quick photo of it before he mailed it off to his sister.  He did great..it is a masterpiece!

Far Guys Lady Slipper

I painted it for him..he wanted the colors muted and soft looking.  I used acrylic paint and watered it down, Far Guy sealed it with beeswax.

Byron is making them by the bunch..these are carved from Black Ash.

Byrons Lady Slippers

Sigh..I wish mine was done.  It must go on the back burner for a bit while we carve Christmas ornaments. No clues right now what they are..it is always a surprise:)

Again, I'm always fascinated by the hobbies of other folks. Wood carving is something that I keep saying I will look at in retirement.

Nice work - I'm sure yours will be as nice when you finish it.

What a talented group you are. There is something so very basic, so near to the very soul of humanity about woodcarving. I always have the desire to start, without the skill to follow through. Keep at it, I am sure you have both.

Goodness girl, you've carved yourself a masterpiece. You'll see when ya put it together. Those are just amazin'. I can't imagine the work Bryon put into his bouquet. I'm quite smitten with the soft color of Far Guys.

Magnificent ya'll. :o)

Have yourself a terrifically blessed and beautiful Tuesday!!!

So lovely and makes me homesick for my wood work. I'm like you though I've just not had time to get back out into the garage, get it organized and back to cutting. Now it will be too cold. Oh to have a heated workshop - sigh. I really like the colors on the one you painted for Far Guy.

They are lovely, and yours will be too! Love the subtle colouring on Far Guys.

I can't do any projects that require gripping with my left hand, anymore, but I always thought carving (well, any kind of woodworking in general) looked absolutely fascinating. These are really amazing how all the parts fit together. FarGuy did a great job! You'll finish yours, too. Christmas is just getting in the way--LOL! ;)

That is just gorgeous. I can't imagine the time it must take. I'm sure the recipients cherish them. I sure would.

I am really impressed that something that is so fluid and flexible in nature really can be recreated in wood. They are wonderful. I like the stain on them too.
