Wistful Wednesday: 1964

This was taken in 1964, at the farm where I grew up.  The only two brothers I have are also in this photo, my sister was not born yet.   If you look closely our dog "Wally" a Spitz is laying in the snow between me and the car.  I was thirteen in this photo..my brothers would have been four and ten.  Those fabulous stretch pants must have been in style back then..and colored tennis shoes..a real fashion statement.  I obviously had recently endured one of those home perms, a Lilt or a Toni..they were horrible stinky things..and just made my hair even more unmanageable.

Here is the same barn, forty five years later..on a nice day last June.  The barn is showings it's age..much like the children that posed in that farmyard so many years ago:)

Superb shot of that old barn. You're all ageing with grace! ;-)

Thanks for pointing 'Wally' out, I would have missed him since he blends into the snow so well. Yep, I hear ya on those perms. Mama was set for me to have the curly look on my board straight hair too. It's a wonder it didn't all fall out.

I enjoyed the pic of your and your bros. The barn amazingly does look the same.

Have a fantastically blessed day!!!

It sure seems like Spitz were a very popular breed in those days. Home perm tortures, don't miss those, I also don't miss getting my hair put on curlers each night.

Yes - loved those stretch pants!!!!!!!!!! Still see some people wearing them - yuk!
I think all of us girls back then had those perms! I have some terrible pics of us with curly hair! Ya, know, the stretch pants helped make you look tall!

Far Side....Thanks --again-- for jogging my memory bank. I wore those "ski" pants too, but not the various color tennis shoes..mine were always white. Although older than you, your pictures take me back to time of youth, vigor and promise...treasured memories. Harriet

I wore that type of stretch pants too and those hideous ones that had stirrups on the bottom. Whoever designed them should have been shot.

That is a wonderful barn. I have a passion for old barns. Whenever we take a drive I am always scouting out unusual ones. They add so much character to the landscape. Maybe it's because of my farming roots or else it just takes a special appreciation for them. I'm not sure. I wish old barns like yours could be restored. They are such a great piece of history.

carolina nana, No it is no longer in the family..but we know the people that live there. My parents sold the farm in 1975. The farm is just two miles from where we live now:)

Did you use Dippy-Do and Adorn hairspray? After the perms came Dippy-do and Adorn hairspary for me and sleeping on curlers so I could have BIG hair.

That is so great that the barn is still standing. In Iowa, the soil would have rotted out all around the bottom. Our family farm barn has fallen in due to lack of care. I loved the car your parents owned. My uncle had one of those.

Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane. I too wore those spandex pants with stirrups and had perms. Those are two things I'm glad I've seen the last of. But that barn is wonderful, then and now.

I recognized that farm right away in the first picture! I remember I went thru a stretch wearing those stirrup pants too and then we wore bigger baggy shirts or sweaters...

You are or were tall - - correct? Yup - - - I am another victim of the stretch pants & perms. However, I think 4th grade was the last time I had the curly perm. In '64, I was wearing a pageboy that could be converted to a flip on days I wanted to change it. That was actually one of my better hairstyles. Spring of '64 was the debut of the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, too - - - right? I was in 7th grade? Ah, Memory Lane!

Love both pictures! I too wore those stretch pants but much later than 64. They must have went out and came back in. I too had the perms and had the perm....many times!!

a wonderful then and now. I had some of those pants too. But mine were hand me downs from a friend. Everything I owned was pre-owned, I think. Well, most.
